Iya-Alaso's Heritage
Location: Manchester

The group intends to conduct research within the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester, which contains several collections of objects and archives relating to textiles made in Manchester and sold to West Africa. The group will also collect and document any materials held within the local community and gather oral histories from the local West African community who remember buying or helped their parents in selling and sewing these textiles through 50 workshops.

Local stories of the indigenous people who had been involved in designing and or marketing the textiles in Manchester for West Africa will also be gathered. A website of the information collected will be created as well as an Exhibition, to be held at the Museum, a West African textile Fashion Show and other events.

An educational CD will be produced from the project report and disseminated to the wider community. The group also aims to organise the first African Women’s heritage symposium (as a separate project) to discuss and establish dialogue on the role of African women’s heritage as social, economic and environmental concerns, including the results of this research.
