Dobcross Village Community - Millennium Project Details

The Plaque
A Plaque based on a map of the village. Superimposed on this are a number of photographs of key historic places. © R G Townend
The idea of a plaque was agreed at a village meeting.
This plaque has a map of the village as its background, with historic photographs of various buildings and sites.
The photographs also have links showing where the sites are located on the map.

The aim was to produce a book which recorded people's recollections of life in the village during the 20th Century.
The author, Freda Millett, who has written many anecdotal histories, advised us how to achieve this project.
Many people were interviewed by Freda and other interviewers. Their stories were recorded, some people loaned photographs to add visual interest to the book.
The book was eventually published, Freda having been greatly assisted by Eric, who typed up all the stories and helped compose the script on his computer.
A copy of the book has been distributed to all households in Dobcross, and has been well received!

The project was to survey the village habitants to discover various information about themselves, and their properties.
Items covered were:-
Family members, ages, occupations, interests, age of
houses, where they lived before Dobcross, how they
meet other people in the village, etc.

A survey form was designed by Chris, and circulated to all the village, and a prize draw was offered as an incentive for people to respond.
The response was about 9 per cent, not bad, according to Chris, who has some experience in these matters.
Chris designed a database and entered all the results.
Bob extracted some data, with help from Chris, and produced a 16 page A5 booklet. (See image for cover).

Village History.

Unfortunately, not all of our project tasks were completed!
Due to extreme pressure of work, and change of job, our historian was unable to complete the village history.
We hope that this will be completed at some future date, as all the information and skill is available, but time is at a premium!
