Mellor's weekend bonanza
Location: Stockport
September 2002
Over the weekend of 7th/8th September 2002, the hard work of sixteen months was on show to visitors in the village of Mellor, part of Stockport in Greater Manchester.
Thanks to LHI funding, the Mellor Archaeology Project has been helping bring to life the finds from this unique Iron Age Hill Fort site.
Discovered by archaeologists in 1998, the Hill Fort surrounding Mellor Church dates from around 500 to 1000 BC, but was later occupied by Romans around 180 AD. Continued excavations have discovered flints from Bronze Age and Mesolithic times, which show that use of the site goes back 10,000 years. The most significant discovery over the last year has been the remains of an Iron Age pot which have now been reconstructed and can be viewed via a rotating computer simulation.
Visitors to the Open Days were given guided tours of the site, examined new artefacts, and tried their hand at metal detecting, besides enjoying a ‘virtual’ computer tour of the settlement as it developed over the 10,000 years.
The Mellor Archaeological Trust is also celebrating the news that its application for further funds from the LHI has been successful. The additional funding will go a long way to help pay for more geophysical surveys of the hill-top and update a booklet, an excavation in the centre of the site and computer technology and training to store and interpret the findings for all to enjoy.
