An Iron Age ditch indicating the existence of a five acre Hill Fort was discovered in 1995. Investigations of the site have led to a range of artefacts being found, from mesolithic through to medieval. The Local Heritage Initiative funded a Phase One project last year on the site and the group now wishes to develop this further.
The group intend to conduct geophysical surveys to find out more about the prehistory of the hilltop, followed by an open-area excavation in the centre of the site. The group will then produce graphical computer models to illustrate the imagined ancient forms and will document the discoveries on computer files.
The group will then provide ways of accessing the information as appropriate to various audiences from professional archaeologists to schoolchildren. Open days and special visits will be held to enable the local and wider community to view the manifestations of 10,000 years of occupation of the hilltop.
Finally, an updated booklet describing the archaeology will be produced. Students of Ridge-Danyers College in Marple are also constructing a replica Iron Age hut. This is fully funded already, but will add to the educational value of the site.
