ROMADAM Project Update - April 2006
Further to our first update, we can now tell you how we have progressed.
We have carried out magnetometry and resistivity surveys of most of the ground within the centre of the Medmenham hill fort where Bolebec's castle was supposed to be. The results of this are still being checked but are not too hopeful so far. There may be something there within the results. But any way, at least the work has been done. Perhaps they will show something significant!
We have completed the surveying and recording of the WW1 Training Trenches present on Marlow Common. We are quite pleased with the results of this because there has been no previous record of these trenches despite our investigations through various museums and military sources. A copy of the plan showing the extent of the trenches is attached to this report. We have given presentations to two local meetings showing the results of this work. We spent 16 weekends surveying 62 20metre grids to cover the whole area and record all the results and are really confident with the end result - this is the FIRST record of these trenches which are possibly the most complete and significant yet recorded within the UK, according to our MOD advisor.
We are now about to complete the topographical survey of an earthwork which is present within Warren Wood (aka Bloom Wood), near to Marlow. This should enable us to decide the function of this earthwork in comparison with others within the Chiltern area.
We shall now embark on the investigation of the next two sites, which we plan to survey and record.
It is very rewarding to see how our proposals are now giving valuable results for us and the local community who now know a little bit more about their local history. This is what our project was set out to achieve.
