ROMADAM Project Update - September 2005
Location: Buckinghamshire

ROMADAM stands for Recording Of Marlow And District's Ancient Monuments, which we thought was a neat way of describing our group's major project for the next 3 years. We have started to survey and record four important earthworks that exist near Marlow. These are Medmenham Iron Age Hillfort, Danesfield Iron Age Hillfort, a circular earthwork of uncertain age at Bloom Wood (Little Marlow) and the First World War Training Trenches at Pullingshill Wood. The results will then be published via a general booklet and site leaflets. Models of each earthwork will be prepared and information panels will be installed on each site and along with displays and presentations in the local library and the Tourist Information Office.

After receiving the good news of the project fund being granted, we held a well publicised open meeting to explain the details of the project. All those who attended were enthusiastic about the task and gave us their wholehearted support. They looked forward to contributing to the success of the Project and to seeing the publication and display of the results.

We began the fieldwork by having a resistivity/magnetometry training day at Medmenham to try and locate the Norman 'Bolebec's Castle' which is reputed to be in the centre of the hill fort. The results were inconclusive, but there is a lot more work to be done.

The next step was to undertake the recording of the Training Trenches. These are extremely complex and, after various trial runs, we have now established a fairly quick and consistent way of completing the task. So far 15, 20m x 20m squares have been done but there could be about another 60 to go!

All the time background research is being gathered. This has involved searching through many records including books and newspapers, maps and having discussions with local societies and contacts and surfing various websites.

At the end of the project we will provide a unique assemblage of information for the benefit of the wider community of Marlow and its visitors.
