Bletchley Railway Banner project
Location: Buckinghamshire

In September 2004 a local artist held 3 day work shops in two local primary schools creating four textile banners based on the Railway History of Bletchley.

Both schools felt this would compliment the Bletchley Railway Heritage Project and allow the children to create some wonderful artwork that would be incorporated into the project.

Each child was asked to create a poster ‘Welcome to Bletchley’ along the lines of old Railway posters promoting the town. The children initially identified areas in Bletchley they felt were important and needed highlighting as a place of interest. Each child then drew a design which they transferred onto calico and using a variety of techniques with paints and fabrics created their ‘poster’. The results were amazing and all the children’s work has been stitched together to create one big banner.

The children also created another banner entitled ‘Transport through the Ages’; this was to reflect the different types of transport that Bletchley & Fenny Stratford would have encountered over time including the railway . Children worked in pairs on this project initially transferring a picture onto calico using tracing paper. Once the design was on the calico the children were able to use different fabrics and textiles to create a 3d effect picture using several processes. Once again the end results were outstanding; both schools were extremely pleased with the results.

During the three day workshop one school also had the opportunity to work on a project using clay. Each child was shown designs of Railway Company Crests and asked to create their own interpretation. They drew their design on paper first and coloured it in, they were then able to start working in clay. The product they used was quick drying clay which could be painted on and did not need to be baked. The crests were made in 3d relief, allowed to dry and then painted.

Each school has been allowed to retain one banner and the other two banners are going to be hung and displayed at the local library who has kindly agreed to have them. Once the crests have been mounted properly they will also be on display in the local library for a time before returning to the school.

This will bring the children's art work to the Community and allow others to see the wonderful creations the children have worked so hard on.
