Bletchley Oral History Interviews
Location: Buckinghamshire

From May 2004 the Heritage Officer attended two local primary schools and spoke to the children about the railways in Bletchley, during this period a list of questions was devised by the children for interviewing people with memories of Bletchley Railway.

The oral history interviews started to take place in May/June 2004, with children from two local primary schools interviewing several retired railwaymen for their stories. The children were extremely interested in the working conditions and how the railways were run. They were amazed to hear that one gentleman had been involved in cleaning the steam engines and had even had to do this with a fire still going! Health & Safety would have had a field day! The children realised that the working conditions were extremely harsh but the railwaymen were loyal to the companies and felt they had a job for life. Many had followed other members of the family into the job, but they felt that at the time they began looking for work there was not as much on offer as there is today.

Since then the Bletchley Community Heritage Initiative volunteers have spoken to train spotters, commuters, retired railway staff and will continue to do so for the remainder of the project. The interviews will be a source of information for the forthcoming IT course which will create a Website/cd rom based on the project, they will also be included in a book. Each interviewee will also receive a copy of their interview to keep for their own records to hand down to their family as a reminiscence of their working life/memories.
