Events for Bucks Geology

Location: Buckinghamshire


July to August 2006
  • PR, publicity and press releases
  • Start the LHI website, especially with details on how to join in activities.
  • Prepare robust assessment protocols and undertake the geological(LGAP) site audit.
  • Encourage local groups and the general public to participate in one of several launch events: conservation work, training days and workshops.
  • Contact local groups and schools with invitations to specific (open)events and also to offer the potential for a specially designed activity for their group.
  • Take work parties on rescue conservation of known ‘at risk’ sites.
September 2006
  • The Bucks Earth Heritage Group consider and approve the audit
  • Publish the audit document (on-line) that will include statements of interest for all sites, general information, photos and the LGAP assessment form.
  • Develop a listing of sites within various categories for future work.
  • Plan a programme of work as appropriate from the listing.
  • Undertake at least one major event (i.e. site clearing, recording or conservation work) per month from now until completion.
  • Improve access to selected sites (as many as appropriate for the work required and the workforce available).
  • Arrange mobile public display in several key areas, such as libraries and museums.
  • Publish/print first leaflets.
October 2006
  • Prepare and design second run of leaflets for new sites.
  • Launch leaflets with a press release and programme information
  • Undertake one major excavation and recording exercise, if appropriate site can be located.
  • Collate, record and assess all field data collected during the spring-summer work period.
  • Deposit specimens at the Buckinghanshire County Museum, in agreement with the natural History Curator.
  • Collate paper data, digitizing information where possible, in partnership with the Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes Environmental Records Centre.
  • Update the group website and the LHI website.
  • Continue work on field sites
  • Start the Autumn-winter talks programme.
Winter 2006-07
  • Main talks programme underway
  • Run indoor workshops on ‘special themes’ such as fossils, or minerals, or the ‘how to’ of geological conservation.
  • Continue field sites - improving access, safety, footpaths, etc work
Spring 2007
  • Further updates of websites
  • Publish/print second leaflet collection
  • Next site enhancements and conservation work
  • Site visits to quarries
Summer 2007
  • June – school activities programme (in the field and in the classroom)
  • Prepare CD-Rom (images, leaflet texts, site information)
  • More site conservation workdays
Autumn-winter 2007
  • Publish the project book
  • Final update of websites ensuring there is a database of all sites with public access.
  • Transfer site information to GIS
  • Ensure all potential RIGS are well documented and propose them to the relevant local authorities for adoption in their respective Local Development Frameworks.
  • Ensure all site owners have been informed of the designation and interest of their site and management agreements are in place if appropriate.
  • Press releases on achievements
  • An end-of project team site visit.
