Ewelme Watercress Project
Location: Buckinghamshire

The Chiltern Society with the full support and involvement of the local community will look at a once thriving industry in the Chilterns, and the wide range of fauna, flora and biodiversity that is supported in a wetlands habitat. One aspect is to research bat habitat and numbers at the Ewelme site. The group will also conduct an ecological survey of the site and are going to produce the results with the aid of professionals in 3 surveys. To encourage wider understanding of the surveys and the history behind the industry, the results are going to be displayed on 4 interpretation boards, and 2000 leaflets will be freely available.

The local primary and secondary schools are going to produce the leaflets and 2000 children's quiz; this is going to be supported with 100 teachers packs again produced by local teachers. The volunteers will gain experience in unusual hydrology associated with watercress beds, skills in site and natural heritage interpretation, which will ensure accessibility of the information discovered and the success of the project in the long term.
