Textile painting workshops
Location: Buckinghamshire

Pupils of High March School, Beaconsfield took part in LHI funded workshops during the Easter holidays at the Fitzwilliams Centre, St. Mary and All Saints Church, Beaconsfield. They were painting textile pictures that were based on Edmund Waller’s life and included scenes from houses where he lived, his poetry and events in his life such as the Civil War. These will then be made into wall hangings which will be displayed in the church and the Fitzwilliams Centre from the 8th – 10th September 2006.

The involvement of the pupils enabled them to participate in the Waller celebrations that will include the following events:
  • an exhibition where the wall hangings will be hung in both the church and the Fitzwilliams Centre
  • an evening of entertainment that will include Germaine Greer giving a talk about the life and times and the poetry of Edmund Waller
  • selected readings of Waller’s poetry
  • his songs set to music will be sung by a choir and soloist.
To encourage involvement of the community of Beaconsfield more workshops are being organised as follows:
  • two IT workshops where the programme for the Saturday evening will be designed
  • a Latin workshop for those wanting to understand a little more about the Latin that is used on tombs and headstones
  • rehearsals of both the Music and Poetry recitals
All these events are being recorded both on video and sound that will be published after the events.

A booklet is currently under production and will include 3 articles that cover the life of Edmund Waller, a critique of his poetry and the history of the Civil War and historical events at that time in the seventeenth century.

The restoration of the Waller tomb will begin in May it is hoped that the work will be completed by the 10th September enabling a special dedication service for the tomb to be held at St. Mary’s church on Sunday 10th September.
