Heritage Trail Leaflet
Location: Buckinghamshire

Newport Pagnell is situated just outside Milton Keynes. For over 1,000 years, with is major roads and two rivers, it has played an important part in the life of North Bucks.

William the Conqueror gave Newport (new-town) and surrounding land to Fulk Pagnell who founded a Priory. The town became so closely associated with his family that it eventually adopted the name.

Thousands of motorists became familiar with the town's name when in 1960 Newport Pagnell was chosen as the site of the first motorway service area in Britain.

The project is producing a heritage trail leaflet, describing important buildings within the town, and includes a map with a short walk of one mile, and a longer one of three miles.

The leaflet also includes descriptions and photographs of historic buildings. The town contains many sites of historic interest including the Salmon and Sons Tickford Works (the forerunner of Aston Martin cars - still produced in the town) and one of the country's last Parchment Works that produces parchment for legal documents and diplomas all over the world.

Young people in local schools have been carrying out interviews and have been doing their own drawings of the important buildings of the town. They have been working with local artist Jerry Siddall to put this material into an exhibition. This exhibition will provide the launch of the leaflet. The leaflet will provide the basis of guided walks by the Newport Pagnell History Society and will be distributed free to schools, hotels and libraries.
