History on Our Doorstep
Location: Buckinghamshire

Wolverton is a Victorian/Edwardian railway town that has recently been granted Conservation Area status.

This project is involving local people in becoming more aware and proud of wolverton's history and distinctive built environment. This is being done by involving them in a range of activities, such as:
  • the production and distribution of a number of publications;
  • an exhibition;
  • a web site.

    Running along the northern and eastern side of the town is the Grand Union corridor canal. Local people are researching the relationship between this canal and the town.

    A "Style Guide", together with a directory of local craftsmen, is being produced by local people, in a bid to retain the distinctive features of wolverton houses through a process of assisted learning and self help. This process is being complemented by a local 'design statement'. A course that taught people how to be house detectives,encouraging them to compile their own house histories has already taken place. Examples of their discoveries will form a part of the final exhibition.
