The Commons consist of ancient scrub and heathland containing a high level of biodiversity. Historical records date back to around 1700 and there is archaeological evidence of two iron age forts and a windmill.
The project is investigating the history of the Commons and promoting its heritage value to local people. It is doing this by producing a "Hawridge and Cholesbury Heritage" document and leaflet on the heritage and amenity importance of the Commons.
The restoration work includes management of undergrowth and scrub to ensure structural diversity. Furthermore, the project is extending the grassland areas, re-opening views and encouraging the regeneration of heather in an area of acid grassland and heathland.
The project is also developing an educational package with emphasis on activities for local school children. The Hawridge Primary School is involved in developing this educational package and in the heather regeneration scheme.
Villagers are contributing to the project by donating old photographs and by taking part in clearance and other conservation work on the Commons.
