Dive onto seabed at site of Victory mooring
Location: City of Southampton
HMS Victory was moored in Portsmouth harbour until 1922 when she was moved into dry dock because of fears for her future after a ship hit her.
Her moorings on the Gosport side of the harbour are well documented on charts and photographs as far back as 1897, with another anchorage being documented in 1855 on the Portsmouth side of the harbour near the common hard. Following research the Portsmouth mooring was discounted because of the seabed type and frequent dredging in that area. The Gosport mooring was chosen for exploration.
A professional dive team from the Hampshire and Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology assisted by volunteer divers from the friends of the trust, dived the site from a Wight Link Ferry launch over 2 days. The area was found to be strewn with artefacts from the early 18 hundreds to the present day and the site was surveyed, video recorded and photographed. A number of non-perishable items were raised from the seabed to assist with research and to make up a display to compliment the project objectives.
