The project is working on an event to raise awareness and understanding of local Sussex heritage in terms of textile production and textile skills.
This scheme has arisen in response to the fact that knowledge of sheep and wool production, knitting, spinning, weaving etc. is largely confined to older generations and specific interest groups.
This three day event will be held in July 2002. Local groups and individuals will display, demonstrate, and where possible, invite visitors to participate in a range of activities related to the textile industry.
The displays will cover the whole 'textile' cycle from production of fibre (plant and animal based), to fabric production, decoration and recycling. They will include sheep rearing, weaving, spinning, sewing, quilting, embroidery and rag-rug making, as well as interpretation of this heritage through dance, storytelling and song.
A range of local groups are involved, including the Women's Institute. Schools are involved in initial investigations of all aspects of the local textiles industry.
