Embrace-In Lewes, 'Castle in the Air'
Location: East Sussex

The aim of this project was to raise awareness and understanding of the history of Lewes Castle, particularly amongst young people.

There were two parts to the project. The first part consisted of a series of workshops aimed at the young, the old and the excluded - all from the local area.

The workshops involved a collection of anecdotes, stories and memories concerning local people and the site. They were then examined in the context of the history of this important heritage feature. The local people then practised "writing big" and transferred their memories onto huge strips of laminated plastic in "fancy" writing.

Some local students visited the County Archive Office in Lewes and discovered documents from Elizabethan times which they then transferred onto the plastic in the ancient dialect.

The workshops then led to the second part of the project, where results of the work were interpreted into the "Castle in the Air" - a huge web or net which literally wove together the memories and heritage.

The "Castle in the Air" was set in the Lewes Castle grounds approximatley 25ft off the ground. This enabled people to literally walk under the woven heritage. This information was then entered onto the Lewes Castle Website, and it is hoped that later on a video will be produced by the group.
