Buriton Heritage Bank
Location: Hampshire
This project is building on the success of a Village Design Statement produced in 1999/2000. It is involving the whole of the community in exploring, recording and explaining a range of local heritage assets.
Through an innovative “Heritage Bank” concept, the project is encouraging local people to “pay-in” information to the project and “draw out” information for their own interest and studies.
One of the methods of doing this is through Village Open Days, held in the Village Hall. Here exhibition stands featuring different local heritage themes are available for the local community to refer to and supplement.
A number of Open Days have been held every year since 2001 and more are planned for the future. Early themes included: “The Buriton Lime Works”, “School Days”, “Farming”, “The Local Church and Chapel” and “How to Become a House Detective”.
More recent exhibitions have covered “Hop Growing and Picking”, “Local Pheasant and Rabbit Shoots”, “Famous people from the parish”, “Local Ghosts”, “Buriton beyond living memory – from the stone age to the steam age” and “Our Natural History”.
In September 2003 the project reached a major milestone with the publication of nine fully illustrated booklets about the heritage of the parish. Copies of each book were provided free of charge to every household in the parish, to help encourage further interest and research.
The Buriton Village Association was formed in the 1970s and comprises local residents of the parish. It holds regular meetings and contributes to the parish magazine.
