Ham Green Conservation Project
Location: Hampshire
This project focuses on natural heritage, although Ham Green also has historical value as a stopover point for Drovers on the way to market in Winchester. It is extremely important to maintain areas of natural biodiversity, since much of the surrounding countryside is devoted to arable farming.
Ham Green is a natural wildlife corridor, linking Crab Wood and Pinsent, both of which have already been allocated SINC status. The Green is located at the southern end of Sparsholt Village nr Winchester. It consists of woodland, a few open areas and ancient hedgerows. Though small, the common provides habitat for a wide variety of birds, small mammals (including dormice and yellow-necked mice) and insects, together with many varieties of native trees, shrubs and flora.
The project aims to: apply for SINC status; to survey the flora/fauna etc. over the year; to plant field edges with native species of hedging plants and trees; to improve the woodland canopy and restore the hazel coppice, in order to support the native mammal population; to produce interpretation boards, a map and illustrated leaflet and a web site.
