Members of the Coppice Craftsmen regularly demonstrate at shows. Here a member is cutting a tent peg from ash, using a stock knife. During the early 1900s, millions of wooden tent pegs were cut for military use in the same fashion. Wooden tent pegs are very sustainable and functional, and campers should question the use of plastic and aluminium on a number of functional, aesthetic, and environmental grounds. © David Harris

Hampshire Coppice - Past Present and Future
Location: Hampshire

Crab Wood is reflective of a once thriving hazel coppice industry, which could at one time be found throughout Hampshire, and the woodland can be closely linked to cultural and industrial developments throughout the area.

The group, made up from local coppice workers, the coppice group, the local college and members of the local community will record oral histories of present and past coppice workers. These events will be filmed and used in the exhibition.

Once the memories have been collected and the video edited, they will be used to produce exhibition panels focusing on the changes to the coppice industry in Crab Wood, though trends could be applicable to the industry throughout Hampshire.

The exhibition will be shown across the local area in libraries, museums and at the local wood fair. To support the reminiscences the group will host demonstration days in the wood where local people can come and experience traditional woodcrafts.

To encourage the use of the woodland the group will develop a self-guided trail through Crab Wood.
