History of Theatre Royal Winchester
Location: Hampshire

Volunteers will investigate the Theatre Royal Winchester which has been a social focal point of the community. It was built in 1850 and initially served as a hotel serving the local live stock market, it then became a cine-variety theatre.Theatre Royal Winchester auditorium in the 1920s when the building was used as a cinema. The walls were decoratively in the style of the time.

During a heritage open weekend the group exhibited a memories table to encourage people to write and record their thoughts. Oral history interviews will be recorded and will in future be a part of Hampshire's sound archive.

A photograph of the outside of the theatre taken in circa 1980The group will also investigate a collection of programmes from the theatre productions between 1976 and 1996, catalogue photographs and memorabilia which will be used to produce an exhibition. The oral histories will be combined with a narrative history of the building to produce a book.

Once the project is nearing completion the information that the group has been collecting will be used to produce education packs, which will be freely distributed throughout the local school community.
