Overton: Uniting Community and Countryside
Location: Hampshire
Overton Biodiversity Society has been proactively surveying hedgerows and will develop biodiversity action plans for ones identified as being at risk. It is also identifying notable trees as part of the Ancient Trees Survey with the Woodland Trust. Information from all the surveys will be fed into national databases. The project will research the history of the medieval meadow land known as “Little Meadow” and will investigate its habitat. The area will be sensitively planted and some hard-standing introduced to improve community access. Local school children will be involved through planting and other activities.
The project will develop 3 different heritage and nature trails and will promote them with guided walk leaflets and seasonal Education Sheets. 3 Information boards will be installed within the village.
The society will hold training events to enhance the development of skills learnt and to ensure that surveying of local habitats is continued. The society will also present talks which will include Fauna, Flora, Shrub identification, Flower identification, Wild Foods and Folklore connected to natural heritage features such as trees.
Overton is recorded in the Doomsday Book and lies partly within the North Wessex Downs, an area of outstanding natural beauty. Its River Test is designated as a site of special scientific interest and the Harrow Way, a prehistoric Ridgeway connecting London to Exeter, crosses the parish.
