Park Wood is an area of woodland. It is surrounded on three sides by housing and on the fourth side by the Portsmouth Road. This was a two phase project.
This first phase involved the local community in researching the natural and human history of the wood and carrying out restoration work.
Volunteers carried out research into the history of the wood and also took part in ecological surveys. The results of this research were successfully presented to local people and the general public through open days, exhibitions and interpretative publications.
The last Woodland Festival was attended by 200-300 people. Members of the group received training in research techniques and this included visits to County Archives.
In relation to the practical work, members of the group received training in first aid, conservation techniques and the use of power tools. Much work was carried out to reveal some of the heritage features of the wood, including feature trees, and the foundations of a Victorian walled garden.
The work has also enhanced traditional wildlife habitats and enhanced access for the local community.
