The Forest Bus
Location: Hampshire
The heritage, origins and cultural traditions of the Gypsy Traveller community are an important part of the history of the New Forest, and this project presents a unique opportunity to record and document these traditions.
Difficulties are: firstly, the low level of literacy and education within the Gypsy community; and secondly, it’s very closed and defensive nature. For this reason, a substantial part of the budget will be spent on facilitation.
Expert help, from outside the Forest Bus organisation, will be used in this facilitation role, and to engage the community in recording stories, poems, and recipes, scanning old photographs, and researching family history.
Project outputs will include a permanent record of the Gypsy community of the New Forest in written form, a web site, and an exhibition of photos; stories and poems. Other voluntary organisations - used to working with the Gypsy community will also be involved in the project, as will the local primary school.
