Kingsclere Heritage Association
Location: Hampshire
The area has identified two sites of historic interest: the first is Romano-British and the second is possibly the location of a residence built for King Henry II, for use on journeys between Windsor and either Winchester or Hamwych (Southampton).
Evidence of the Roman site is borne by large amounts of pottery shards, roman roof tiles, brick fragments and coins. Documentary evidence on King Henry’s residence is on Pipe Rolls where the Sheriff accounts for the buildings of houses, repairs etc.
Artefacts of a medieval nature have also been found – a brooch, metal artifacts and medieval pottery shards. This application is for Phase I of the project, to carry out a Geophysical Survey by Southampton University, with the full support of the County Archaeologist. This will, hopefully, prove that the historical sites exist.
Phase 1 has been completed and the results are being evaluated. Resistivity and magnetometer surveys were completed on both sites and they were field walked by schoolchildren and by the members of the archaeology classes at Basingstoke College of Technology. A considerable number of finds were recorded and the items have been stored for further examination
A video explaining Phase 1 is currently being edited.
Phase II will consist of an archaeological investigation, site interpretation, pamphlet, web site, exhibitions and displays.
