The Tidgrove Warren Project
Location: Hampshire
Phase 1 of the project was successfully completed; the geophysical survey has confirmed that there is a Roman building (possibly a villa). The survey has also found evidence of a medieval enclosure with building foundations on the royal house site. This would go some way in confirming that
The Port Way, especially the 'Lands of Clere' was a thriving community in Roman Britain. Phase 2 will start with local school children field walking the site to raise awareness and will be promoted through the local paper, before the full project begins. Once underway the local schools will be invited to spend a day at the site learning about the local heritage, which has been discovered through the dig.
The dig will be carried out with the support of local volunteers, as well as an archaeology student from Farnborough and Basuingstoke collages of technology. The County Archaeologist has been consulted throughout the planning of phase 2.
The project is going to produce a leaflet to interpret the site, a video, local exhibition and outreach work with local schools.
