Project overview
Location: Isle of Wight
For many years the Community Partnership has been trying to improve the appearance of Castle Lane, the entrance to the Castle. It was so "scratty" that it was no surprise that visitors did not give it a second glance. The Castle ought to be the major tourist attraction in the town.
Now English Heritage has embarked on a major up-grading of the Castle and, as a first step is re-paving the lane with York stone slabs. A major feature will be a mural of glass, ceramic and clay tiles on the right-hand wall of the lane depicting events in the town's history. The local schoolchildren have been involved in the design.
The presentation of Castle Lane will be completed by an ornamental arch at the road end and some lighting to enhance the area after dusk.
It is also planned to install further ceramic plaques around the town drawing visitors' attention to major historic buildings. A small guide-book is also to be prepared with a mapped trail outlining the key events in the town's history and the relevant sites. The trail will terminate at the Castle.
The whole project, apart from the arch and the lane's surface is being financially supported by the LHI grant. The arch is to be funded by the Town Council, the Town Trust and the Partnership Committee.
The final phase of the project concerns what to do inside the Castle itself and how it may be better presented. English Heritage are now embarking on the planning for this phase and the work is due to be carried out next winter.
