Remembering Ryde in the Fifties
Location: Isle of Wight
Ryde is a popular seaside resort on the Isle of Wight, which experienced its 'heyday' in the 1950's. The local community of Ryde approached Ryde Development Trust for assistance in developing a community heritage project inspired by this era.Aspects of particular historical interest include Ryde Pier (the UK's first pleasure pier) which during the fifties featured a tramway, a steam railway and even a ballroom a the pier head. The project aims to raise awareness of local heritage, particularly pertaining to the local community and its relationship with the tourist industry. Project outputs will include a training course for young people in recording oral histories, video editing and photography; outreach workshops (including '50's dance workshops); public talks and exhibitions;historical walks topublished trail booklet;a web siteand a video documentary to include historical photographs and old cine film footage contributed from the local community.
