Project background
Location: Isle of Wight
During Ryde Arts Festival 2002, a talk about Ryde in the 1950's attracted an enthusiastic audience of 200 people. Following on from this, the local community approached the Ryde Development Trust for assistance in developing a community heritage project.
Ryde, a popular seaside resort on the Isle of Wight, reached its heyday in the 1950's. Aspects of local history include the Ryde Pier - built in 1814, and eventually the main arrival/departure point for cross-Solent ferries - a tramway, steam railway and ballroom.
The project aims to raise awareness of local heritage, particularly pertaining to the local community's relationship with the tourist industry. Project outputs will include a training course involving young adults in Ryde, interviewing older members of the community, outreach workshops (including '50's dance workshops), public talks and exhibitions, historical walks to include a published trail booklet, and a video documentary to include old photographs and 'home' cine film contributed from the local community. A web site will also be produced.
