The underwater heritage around the Isle of Wight is one of the richest in the world. This project will help make that resource visible to a large number of people. The region hosts both shipwrecks and submerged landscapes dating back around 8,500 years.
Activity days at the Maritime Heritage Exhibition at Fort Victoria will be arranged and education packs compiled for children and schools. The local community and visitors from further afield will be given the opportunity to attend open days, where they will experience simulated maritime archaeology through interactive activities.
Three nationally important sites within the area will be investigated. These are: The Needles, Alum Bay and the submerged landscapes of Bouldnor Cliff in the Western Solent. Project outputs will include two open days, workshops, a permanent exhibition and project results recorded in booklet, CD Rom and poster form.
