The Alverstone Dig
Location: Isle of Wight
Working with the local community (including local schools) to study and document completely unexpected and incredibly significant iron age and roman remains excavated from the village in Sept ’05, and to display and celebrate the whole story through events, exhibitions and presentations.
High quality interpretative materials will be produced – signboards, a book and leaflets, a website, a permanent display including finds and a reconstruction of the site from Iron Age to Saxon times.
The site archaeologist in various venues around the parish will give a programme of 3 lectures and 4 school visits and attendees will be encouraged to contribute their knowledge of the area to build up a picture of the historical significance of the village. Following on from these, 3 public workshops will be held to enable local people to work with archaeologist and the group on the design of the exhibition and the best way to celebrate the story.
The site is rich in archaeological finds and spans a history of human occupation of 10,000 years – there is considerable natural heritage as well as cultural and social and the site could be of international significance. It is intended to use this project as a first phase to build understanding and encourage local interest as the group hopes to create a programme of archaeological workshops run locally during the post-excavation stage of the dig. The project will also include wheelchair access to view the site.
