The Floating Bridge
Location: Isle of Wight
The first Floating Bridge on the Isle of Wight was introduced in 1859, and since then there have been 9 replacement bridges. There are only 5 remaining floating bridges throughout the UK. The Bridge connects Cowes with East Cowes, separated by the River Medina on the Isle of Wight. It has been a known crossing point for centuries, depicted in the cartoon drawings of Rowlandson and now having one of the last working chain ferries in the country. The project aims to make the bridge a heritage attraction in its own right by providing interpretation for the many local people and tourists who use the bridge free every day. Artists will work with local groups, including schools, to design the interpretation material. This will take the form of displays of local heritage artefacts on the bridge, relating to the history of Cowes and East Cowes to passers by. The history of the towns will also be related through enamelled plates containing words and images. The interior of the bridge will also be re-painted in colours that reflect the yachting heritage of the area. This work will be carried out free by bridge staff and materials donated by local businesses.
