Amherst Heritage Centre Education Programme
Location: Kent

Fort Amherst was originally built to protect Chatham Dockyard from invasion and attack from the French. The fort has a maze of tunnels and battlements, which will provide a dramatic learning environment for the community.

The group will, through a series of workshops, develop historical research skills; they will investigate military life at the fort, food rations, uniforms and weapons. The schools will also engage in the fort's heritage through four role play sessions, which will be recorded and be shown in the final exhibition.

The information will be used to produce 40,000 leaflets and 6 interpretation panels. The group will also investigate the natural heritage of the fort and surrounding area, resulting in a heritage trail and 10,000 leaflets.

Local school teachers will assist in the development of 1000 education packs. The Amherst Heritage Centre will also host an exhibition of the completed project.
