Introductory meeting

Bedgebury Industrial Archaeology
Location: Kent

The Friends of Bedgebury Pinetum have over 1600 members many of whom live in the surrounding local villages. The friends group and local school are going to investigate the existing maps of the pinetum with the aid of an archivist specialising in medieval Latin, and with the expert assistance of a landscape archaeologist, are going to undertake a 'walkover', which will produce a level 2 survey of the area. This will enable areas of archaeological interest to be identified and interpreted.

The Weald is considered to be one of the first truly industrial centres of Britain and the legacy is visible Hammer Ponds and other features are yet to be discovered.

Throughout the production of interpretation panels, guided walks and 10000 leaflets (that will be freely available to all visitors and the local community), the archaeological investigation and the changes to land use and its history will be made accessible to the wider population and local community. An exhibition will be held in the Cranbrook Museum as a finale to the project.
