Blean Heritage and Community Project
Location: Kent

The Blean is an ancient woodland just outside Canterbury, and often overlooked as a heritage asset in favour of the cathedral. The group have been inspired by another LHI project currently in the Blean.

The aim of this project is for the volunteers to research the archaeological heritage of the woods and create 3 woodland walks that will include features such as veteran trees. Scheduled Ancient Monuments, archaeological structures, such as kilns and Bronze Age Burrows.

The group will produce 1500 trail leaflets and 20000 heritage leaflets, all of which will be made freely available to the local community. The group will document the progress of the project in 5000 newsletters distributed to the community freely in 5 editions.

To ensure the sustainability of the walks the volunteers will receive training in maintenance and interpretation skills. The group will produce a survey by mapping veteran trees. The volunteers will visit Medway Biological centre and the survey will be archived there.

The finale will be a walking festival that will include an exhibition, a big tree hunt, 2 evening lectures and 4 interpretative guided walks.
