Chartham Hatch - Village School to Village Hall
Location: Kent
Chartham Hatch's village school was built in 1874 and opened in 1875 and was in use as a school until 1966. In this final year, the village issued shares allowing the community of Chartham Hatch to buy the school so it could remain used by the local community as a village hall and community meeting place. The project is going to interview residents who attended the school, including some who attended during the 1st world war.
Once the memories have been documented a book will be produced and made available to the wider community. Any funds raised will be used to restore a sliding partition which is part of the old school structure. An event will be held giving local school children, the over 50's group and local history society an opportunity to compare different schooling experiences, and this will be used to supplement the history curriculum at Chartham Primary School. On completion of the project the group will be holding an exhibition in the former school.
The group are going to record the interviews, and video the exhibition and the event, and this will be presented in a CD-ROM/DVD and on a village website to supplement the book. This material will be featured in the Welcome Pack which is given to residents newly settled in the village, to help encourage wider access to information and local heritage.
