Report No 1
Project progress report 1 February 2005
The team was pleased to find that all their painstaking preparation of the application had paid off. The Lhi grant was awarded to start 1st November 2004
Local Press coverage and photo brought some interest and useful leads.
The Chartham Society’s Historical Group held an exhibition in St Mary’s Church Chartham on history and artefacts from local Pubs. This fascinating display billed as “Local Locals” attracted people from far and wide, some of who volunteered memories of the School days at the Chartham Hatch Village School.
Some pupils from the past have been interviewed and articles and photographs have been forthcoming. The list of people to be interviewed is growing day by day.
Information about the Village School to Village Hall project has also been displayed in the Hall and requests for help, photos and memories have been placed in the Chartham Parish Magazine and the Chartham Hatch Village Hall News letter.
The project team has been loaned some interesting cine footage of the reconstruction of the “Bell Tower / Ventilator”. A late villager not only reconstructed the whole thing from one photograph, using bricks in the photo background to calculate the size and dimensions, but he also documented his actions from start to finish on Super 8mm film. The tower has since been renovated, and details are being recorded.
An unmade cutout model of the village hall has been unearthed. It was designed and drawn by the late Joe Auty, an art teacher at the Simon Langton School for Boys. Joe was a well respected figure who quietly co-ordinated most events in the early days of the Village Hall. Recently a volunteer scanned and cleaned up the drawing and we now have the digitised files on disc for use on PCs or Macs. Small models are now available for team members to take out as memory aids when interviewing people in their own homes.
Purchases made so far:-
1. CD recorder and microphone for capturing sound bytes and interviews. 2. Software to enable the building of a Village Hall Website.
One volunteer with an IT background has started to receive training in the use of the software and two others with an interest in Web Design have also attended the sessions.
The project page on the LHI Website has been edited and two photos and Jon Wilmot’s drawing of the Hall have been added.
The Chartham Society’s Historical Group has come up with lots of information from the past, but there is still much to be researched and there are many leads to be followed up.
