Chatham Artillery Defence Project
Location: Kent

The aim of this project is to increase public understanding and knowledge of the importance of the medway Towns fixed defences over a period of some 400 years.

Chatham Defence Lines update –May 2006.

In late November medway Historical Ordnance (MHO) was awarded a grant by the Local Heritage Initiative (LHI).
The purpose of the grant was to establish a military heritage trail around the substantial Napoleonic fortifications at Chatham known as the Chatham Lines. Much of the area is public open space, but there is very little information to allow people to understand what remains and its historical significance.
The Chatham Lines have been put forward as a potential World Heritage Site for consideration by UNESCO.

MHO is committed to producing a number of outcomes. These include; establishing the heritage trail with fourteen interpretive panels, producing a free trail leaflet, producing a more definitive guide for sale, which will pay for upkeep of the project and the provision of four gun carriages to mount historical cannon on a part of the heritage trail.

Since establishing the project, MHO has identified partners who will work with them and their volunteers to establish the heritage trail.

Progress to date has included detailed discussions with the principal land owners around the positioning of the interpretive boards. Discussions on the design and content of the boards. The proposed route has now been established and agreed in principal with the land owning partners.

The construction of the four gun carriages has been commissioned and is now at an advanced state. They are being constructed by local craftsmen of oak, with the iron work being manufactured by MHO volunteers and young people under supervision.

The Chairman of MHO, Glen Robinson says “There is still a great deal to be done to make this project a reality. However we have got of to a great start and we are delighted with the progress made to date and the support we have received, including a number of articles in the local press”.

The next stage of the project will be to complete the design details of the interpretation panels, agree with partners the precise locations and to complete work to the gun carriages in preparation to mounting the canons on them.
