The nature Area project will:
Establish nature walks, Restore the Victorian herb garden and vegetable garden, Set up a pond area, sensory garden, meadow and orchard.
The oral heritage project will involve investigating the history of Furness School by:
Talking to local people, past pupils and their relatives and making a permanent record of their memories, Studying primary and secondary sources - census returns, letters, newspaper articles, history books, school records and photographs.
However, we are going to do much more than this - we want to bring history alive!
The pupils, will do some researching of their own as part of the curriculum, We will recreate a day as the school used to be in about 1910 on 4 July 2006, We are going to interview past pupils, We will make a video about the History of the school, We will use a storyteller to help us step back into the past, In addition we will produce study packs for pupils and visitors to the School.
Progress update
Very successful launch day 26 September 2005, Good progress is being made on the meadow and orchard, Past pupils have been contacted through the Internet, pamphlets and by word of mouth, Past pupils have visited the school, been given guided tours and interviewed. This has given us an interesting picture of the school from 1939 until the 1950s, A storyteller has been contacted and used, A wide variety of sources have been collected, recorded and scanned, A GCSE Local History coursework assignment based on the change in use of the buildings and site over the last hundred years has been completed, All pupils will be studying a local history module as part of the curriculum
