This project aimed to introduce children to the landscape and heritage of the North Downs. This was accomplished through involving primary schools in an art based investigation and interpretation project.
The children, with the help of key staff and professionals, researched their local heritage and decided what was most important to them. They then celebrated this through storytelling, play and performance.
The project involved groups working on their own individual areas and then culminated in a series of six individual performances and a celebratory booklet. The wider community engaged with the project through the involvement of children and families. The performances also used as a focus a "storytellers chair", built by local craftsman using local produce.
Field trips also took place in Caterham, Wouldham and Hollingbourne. The schools involved were from Dorking, Hollingbourne, Chilham, Caterham, Burham and Wouldham. The children at St. Mary's Primary School in Chilham presented "Writers on the Road".
The stretch of the North Downs Way from Westwell to Canterbury has been home and inspiration to many writers. The ramblers setting out on the journey, which was the background of this performance, met some of them along the way. Writers included Jane Austen and William Cobbett. There were other characters too, such as the son of Richard III, the World War II soldier and Sir Dudley Diggs who rebuilt Chilham Castle.
