Kendale Road Project

Digging for Victory

Kendale Road Project
Location: Kent

Local primary school children getting involved in the work of the Kendale Road Allotments.

Two of the pictures show the children helping to turn over the compost heap, a very important part of the work. We usually have three or four heaps going at the same time and try to make as much of our own compost as possible using up grass cuttings, hedge clippings and kitchen waste. Our allotments are organic and we use no chemicals.

The children come down from the school every week, different classes coming on a rotation basis, so that the whole school is involved in growing the vegetables. This is linked to what is taught in class about life of plants and growing cycles and to what is taught about eating fruit and vegetables.

Smaller groups from two other schools are also involved in working on the allotments and a number of local adults have recently begun to get involved since they have seen what the children are doing.

A video archive has been started recording the work done on the site and research has started to look into the history of the use of this piece of land in the past.
