Kendale Road Allotments
Location: Kent

The allotment site is located on a housing estate, which was built on farmland in the 1920's. The allotments themselves have been in use since the 1940's. This site, now run down and almost derelict, is the only reminder of the previous farming landscape.

The project aims to maintain the tradition of the estate as a "place in the country", by working with local schools to restore the allotments, and raise awareness of its history.

By taking part in restoration work on the allotments, children - and their parents - will learn about products that have been traditionally grown in the area. Schools will also work with a reminiscence group - consisting of older residents - to record their memories of the farming landscape and associated traditions. These memories will be recorded on video, and through an archive of old photographs and written materials that will be available to the new community in the new library.
