Reclaiming Church Landway for the Community
Location: Kent
The land at Church Landway was once a traditional Kentish smallholding with traditional orchards, woodland and grassland habitats. When bought by developers it was used as a dumping ground, until a member of the community purchased the land and gave it back to the community as a trust.
The trust has already over 250 members and has held 'work days' leading up to the LHI application where 300 members of of the village helped clear the site. Through training sessions in habitat and traditional land management, the project will enable the community to develop sustainable skills to maintain the site through hedgerow and grassland planting and traditional haymaking.
The scouts and school groups will be invited to contribute to the designs of the interpretation and welcome panels using the space as an open-air classroom. The wider community will be informed of the progress and of events through the Woodland newsletter and through a series of guided walks, such as moth and bat identification.
The community will keep wildlife diaries to monitor the return of traditional wildlife, to an area recognised as an Area of Local Landscape Importance by Maidstone Borough Council.
