Story of the rake maker

Recording Woodland and Agricultural Craft Industries
Location: Kent

The project was instigated as a direct result of the terminal illness of a local craftsman, highlighting the urgency to record woodland industrial crafts which are rapidly in decline.

The project will record the details of 3 current practitioners of ancient agricultural related crafts. The first of these industries being researched will be rake making followed by chestnut fence making, concluding in general woodland crafts - fruit baskets, ladders and material for wheelwrights.

The group will record the traditional skills through photography, oral history, video, written material and learn traditional skills through training days. To ensure the highest quality of research, the group will be trained in oral history and video recording.

15000 booklets will be produced interpreting the industries and will be freely distributed to the local community. 3 mobile display panels to be used as a learning tool and outreach to the wider community through the local libraries. To celebrate the completion of the project the group will produce an exhibition which will be hosted at the local museum
