SeaSheppey2005 (linked to SeaBritain2005)
Location: Kent
The group will research the maritime heritage of the Blue town on the Isle of Sheppey, focusing on 1805 and Nelson, who has historic links to the town as his body arrived their in a barrel of brandy after the Battle of Trafalgar.
The diaries of Samuel Pepys, maritime events like Nore Mutiny and the role Sheppey played during the 2nd World War will be investigated and provide the core focus of the project. Local schools, scout groups, sea cadets, RNLI and the local history society will host 54 workshops that will be professionally supported in historic research, photography, film, drama and traditional costume.
The information gathered will be used to recreate costumes and re-enact the maritime heritage of the Island, which will be videoed. The group will investigate photographic records and archives to produce an exhibition. The group will host 10 workshops that will investigate traditional sea shanties and folk songs sung by sailors, These will be performed at the SeaSheppey Festival by members of the community led by The Shipwright Shanty Crew. Once the group has completed the research and interpreted the heritage through re-enactment and exhibitions they will produce 4000 booklets of their findings and events celebrating the varied nautical histories of Blue Town.
