Clowes Wood Archaeology Project
Location: Kent
This project, funded by the Blean Local Heritage Initiative began in March 2004. The core interest came from the Canterbury Woods Research Group who have been studying Blean Woods for a number of years, joined by local enthusiasts who had signed up at the two local history exhibitions or read about the project in the Blean newsletter or the local press.
At the first meeting Dr Nicola banister gave an introduction to woodland archaeology and why it is important. She explained that we needed to find out as much as possible about the history of Clowes Wood before going out and looking for archaeological features on the ground.
So training sessions were held at the Canterbury Cathedral Archives, the Centre for Kentish Studies at Maidstone and the National Record Office, Kew.
Another ‘classroom’ session was held to allocate tasks to different members of the group, who then carried out the research individually, coming together again to pool their findings at the end of the summer.
A few gaps remain, but the field part of the investigation began with an introduction to prepare us for work outdoors as soon as autumn has really begun.
