The Blean Initiative
Location: Kent

The Blean is a large woodland complex near Canterbury, second only to the New Forest in size. In order to enhance the area's unique natural and cultural heritage, this initiative will promote the woodlands and encourage multi-purpose woodland management.

There are 3 main parts to the scheme. A local history project will record personal memories of the area through oral interviews, demonstrations of traditional woodland crafts and management techniques at 2 events, and provision of a permanent exhibition of archive photographs.

A woodland archaeology project will include an archaeological survey of Clowes Wood and a training course to enable volunteers to undertake further surveys.

A natural heritage project will raise awareness of the natural heritage of the woodlands through a guided walks programme, and workshops for woodland owners and contractors.

The community of interest in these woods is wide ranging and includes owners such as the RSPB, Forest Enterprise, The Woodland Trust, private owners, local community groups and many more.
