Woodland Archaeology - Field Work in Clowes Wood
Location: Kent

The Clowes Wood Archaeology project, funded by the Local Heritage Initiative, began in March. Over the summer the history of the wood has been researched and the first field visit took place on Friday 29th October.

The group met Dr Nicola Bannister in Clowes Wood car park for an introduction to woodland archaeological investigation. During this session the group;
  • learnt the technique of sketch plotting
  • found the ditch and wood banks marking the boundary of the wood
  • Measured the width of the banks and ditch
  • Recorded the depth of the ditch

  • The group is hoping to survey the whole of Clowes Wood over the autumn period – a daunting task! We will then, under the guidance of Dr Bannister, produce a report.
