Travellers Cultural Heritage Project
Location: Kent
The project began with a series of meetings with various agencies to discus how problems of social exclusion for the traveller community might be addressed. This became the Travellers Working Group. The idea for this particular scheme arose out of those meetings, as an expanded version of an event held in Cranbrook, Kent, in 2002, entitled “Moving On”.
This event will be held in Dover and will involve speakers, story-tellers, hands-on crafts, music, dance, food, and photographic displays of British and Central European Romany. All activities will be video-taped. Local schools – particularly those with travellers children, or are situated near traveller sites, will be encouraged to take part in the event and free transportation will be provided.
Two professional artists will visit the schools prior to the event to help raise awareness of traveller culture within the context of this heritage event.
Finally, as part of the event, Kent County Libraries, Kent Learning Forum and others, will provide stalls and displays of the services available to both long-term British travellers, and more recent gypsy and traveller immigrants. The event will be free to the general public.
