This project was set in Vinters Valley, a local Nature Reserve. It is the site of a former house and Estate dating back to the 1350s. The idea for the project was prompted by the number of questions from visitors regarding the history of the site - questions which the Warden was unable to answer.
Features on the site included a Roman crematorium and the remnants of the old Estate House, which was burnt down in the mid 20th century. Also included are the ha-ha, ice house, barrel bridge and silt traps.
The area has had a succession of owners. Recollections of local people on the use of the Estate included the history of quarrying, paper making, and fuller's earth production. The history of the site also included the diverse parkland which involved Humphrey Repton in its creation.
Firstly, the project involved local people in researching and recording all historical aspects of the site and produced a book for the local community.
Secondly, the project raised awareness and understanding of this Nature Reserve and its historical contents.
The project produced a booklet, exhibition and a historical record of research carried out for the archives.
